Cohort program
The walks are open to everyone. Most visitors take them on their own. A smaller group walks them together — twelve at a time, four months at a time, with the curators present.
This is the application page for that smaller group.
— from the curator's notebook: "The cohort is the room where what a walk surfaces becomes a conversation. The room exists because some questions require more than the walk can carry."
Twelve walkers. Four months. Two video sessions a month with a curator. One commission. No required reading list, no degree, no prerequisite.
Cost
€480 for the four months. €240 for students under 26 and residents of lower- and lower-middle-income countries. Two scholarship places per cohort, reserved on request.
Time
Roughly three hours a week — about ninety minutes of walking, ninety minutes of reading or making, plus the office hour twice a month.
When
Cohorts run twice a year. The next opens 1 September 2026 and runs through 31 December. Applications close 1 August.
Where
Online for the office hours. The walks themselves are read wherever you are. Most cohorts have walkers in five or six time zones at once.
— if any of these does not work for you, write to us before applying. Most things are negotiable.
Four short answers. There is no application fee. Decisions arrive within three weeks of applying — earlier if a place opens earlier. Twelve places per cohort.
Thank you, walker. Your application is in.
A curator reads every application personally. You will hear from us within three weeks. If a place opens earlier, you will hear sooner. If we cannot place you in this cohort, we will tell you the reason and offer the next one.
In the meantime, the walks are open. Take whichever you have not taken yet.
There are two other ways to be inside the institution without applying to the cohort. The first is the open walks — anyone can read them, leave a mark, and come back. That is most visitors. The second is the institution's general membership, which supports the publishing program, opens the archive, and gives access to single events. Membership lives at institution.art/memberships.
If you are mostly here for the school, the Decolonized History of Art course is a separate program with its own dates and tuition. See the school surface.
The cohort is one of six surfaces. Take the one that matches the question you arrived with.
